Castillón qualifies for Italy Major in Rome
Some victories weigh more than three won sets. At the Italy Major at the Foro Italico in Rome, Carmen Castillón experienced exactly such a moment. One year after being forced to miss the prestigious tournament in the Italian capital due to several pulmonary embolisms, the Spaniard is back on the Premier Padel circuit – and already celebrated a success in qualifying that goes far beyond sport.
One year out after a serious health problem
In 2025, the then 24-year-old Andalusian's career came to an abrupt halt. During an FIP circuit tournament in Romania, Castillón suffered several pulmonary embolisms. The medical emergency forced her to temporarily suspend her sporting career and focus entirely on recovery.
The timing was especially bitter: she had to miss the Italy Major, one of the season's highlight events on the Premier Padel tour. Instead of stepping onto the courts at the Foro Italico, months of rehabilitation, medical checks and a cautious restart away from the big stages followed. For a player who lives professional sport as her purpose, it was more than a classic injury break.
An emotional fresh start at the Foro Italico
Twelve months later, Castillón was given a second chance at exactly the same venue. Alongside María Portillo, she entered the Italy Major qualifying draw and beat the Italian pair Stellato and Sussarello 6-1, 6-4 in the final qualifying round. With that, the Spanish duo secured a place in the main draw.
On paper the result was clear, but the meaning of the moment could not be measured in set scores. After the match win, Castillón broke down in tears – an image that quickly drew attention and illustrated the scale of this qualification. What looked from the outside like another step on the qualifying tree was, for the player, the visible conclusion of a long road back to elite padel.
From the FIP tournament in Romania back to the Premier Padel stage
The health shock in Romania marked the low point of a previously rising career. Pulmonary embolisms are a serious diagnosis in elite sport, capable not only of stopping competition in the short term but also defining physical limits in the long run. Castillón therefore chose a full withdrawal rather than returning too early under pressure.
The Italy Major symbolised everything she missed: the crowd at the Foro Italico, the density of competition and the prestige of a major on the Premier Padel tour. That she returned at exactly this venue turns the qualification into a personal as well as sporting story – not merely a result note from qualifying.
Portillo as partner and stable reference in doubles
For the comeback attempt, Castillón chose María Portillo as her partner. In women's doubles, chemistry between both sides of the court often decides rhythm, communication and ultimately the match. Against Stellato and Sussarello, the Spanish team showed dominance from the start: the first set went clearly 6-1 to Castillón and Portillo, and in the second they stayed consistent to close the match 6-4.
The Italians had home advantage in Rome, yet Castillón looked mentally strong in the decisive phases. For qualifying, every won ball meant not only sporting superiority but also a signal to the field: the long break had not pushed her out of tour contention.
What the Italy Major means for the season
The Italy Major is one of the central dates on the Premier Padel calendar. For players returning after time out, a major is the toughest test: high level, a compact tournament structure and constant risk of early losses against top-seeded pairs. That Castillón has at least cleared the qualifying hurdle is therefore already a notable interim goal.
Stronger opponents, longer match sequences and a crowd that follows every moment intensely await in the main draw. Yet the psychological effect of a successful comeback at the Foro Italico should give Castillón extra energy. Many athletes say that exactly such emotional milestones make the difference between cautious and confident play.
The symbolic power of a qualification beyond the result
Padel thrives on stories that make the moment tangible – and this one undoubtedly belongs among them. Castillón did not only return to the rankings but to a place linked with the hardest phase of her career. The qualifying win does not replace the months lost, but shows she wants to walk the long road back with concrete results, not symbols alone.
For the Rome crowd, the scene after the match remains striking: tears, embraces, the relief after a 6-1, 6-4 that can look routine in statistics but is anything but ordinary in context. Premier Padel often celebrates peak sporting performance – here the focus was that some victories are also personal release.
